Before speaking, ask yourself how you relate to the discussion We encourage all participants to remain aware of how our identities, social background and the way our bodies function, and the different life experiences we have had as a result, impact how we may perceive or react differently to certain topics. Before speaking, we suggest that you consider if the discussion is one in which you should be taking up space: if yes, go for it!; and if not, leave space for those who are more concerned to speak in priority, and focus on listening and learning from other’s experiences. 2. Respect others’ autonomy and agency. Your choices aren’t the only valid ones. Our paths have given rise to different needs and not all lifestyles are accessible or safe for everyone. For example, it’s easier to tell yourself that you’ll live on very little money if you have a safety net (family, studies…) than if you grew up in a precarious situation. Whatever your choices, please leave judgement of others for theirs outside this space. 3. Do not silence the words and emotions of others Some discussions can bring up strong emotions, especially when you are directly affected by the subject of the discussion. Don’t try to calm someone’s anger or other emotions, especially if you are not directly involved in the situation. Keep in mind that Black, racialized and working class people often have their speech cut off because they are too angry. If you are uncomfortable speaking out as a white, middle- or upper-class person, we suggest that you talk first to people close to you or to the awareness team before asking people to “make an effort” or to speak calmly. 4. Be mindful of the language you use and be open to explaining word choices If you choose to use words that are specific to activism or academia, explain what they mean to you. Not all of us are aware of all the terms, all the struggles, or we may put different meanings behind the same word. Let’s not contribute to the gatekeeping of certain topics! 5. Not everyone likes to be touched Before you engage in physical contact, such as a hello kiss or hug, ask the other person’s opinion. You may also use a more neutral way to say hello, such as waving your hand. 6. Think of how it might impact people around you before consuming substances If you want to smoke, drink or use other substances, ask if it’s okay with the people around you. There will be specific areas set aside for drinking alcohol and smoking. Pensa com pot afectar les persones que et rodegen abans de consumir substàncies Si vols fumar, beure o fer servir altres substàncies, pregunta si està bé per a les persones que et rodegen. Hi haurà àrees específiques destinades a beure alcohol i fumar. Si us plau, no ofereixis alcohol, cigarrets, marihuana o cap altra substància a ningú sense saber si ho volen, ja que pot ser desencadenant per a persones que no la consumeixen o que han deixat de consumir i reben múltiples invitacions. 7. We want to create spaces that are as safe as possible and break down oppressive behaviors. However, we all have been socialized in an oppressive society and will bring these into the space, whether we intend to or not. One of these oppressive systems - one that still remains very invisibilized, even in political groups - is ableism. We want to stand in solidarity with people affected by ableism, and start a process of breaking down barriers at our festival (and beyond). This page will list some of these concrete efforts, while acknowledging the many limits both because of physical and financial capacity, as well as limits in our own self-reflection process, as the organizing team has been mainly socialized as able-bodied. Selling drinks at the bar, preparing the meals in the kitchen, or cleaning the lovely compost toilets - it is all (reproductive) work that we need extra hands for. We are envisioning a group of in total around 20 people who are up for doing the work necessary to make the festival happen together with the team who has been organising the festival so far! We will meet before the festival on the 15th of September for a fun day at Can Masdeu where we can get to know each other, explore the place, and work together on a plan for the volunteer shifts - so you will get the opportunity, just like everyone else, to express your preferences regarding when and what work you want to do! The orga team will come with suggestions, but we are inviting you to share your ideas and experience with us on how to make this experience fun and sustainable for everyone :) We will work the day before the festival to Metamorfosify Can Masdeu (think about creating safe(r) spaces, putting up signs, etc.), on the 3 days of the festival (4/5/6 Oct) and on the day after the festival to bring back Can Masdeu to its pre-festival glory, and taking with us amazing memories. As a degrowth and queer ecology collective, we will not glorify “hard work”, but instead aim to prefigure what (reproductive) work can look like outside of / in the cracks of capitalism.
